Biography

Education
(John) Michael Jack was born in 1946 and is married to Alison a special needs teacher. They have two sons. He was educated at Bradford Grammar School, Bradford  Technical College, and Leicester University, and holds a BA (Economics) degree and a M.Phil. in Transport Economics. 

Commercial Experience
Until he entered Parliament, Mr. Jack was the Sales Director of a L O Jeffs Ltd a fresh produce supply company, part of Northern Foods. He also worked in a management  capacity at Proctor and Gamble and Marks and Spencer, where he was PA  to the then Sir Derek Rayner the company's joint managing director. He has also been a member of the  Eastern Area Electricity Consultative Council, and of the Mersey Regional Health Authority 

Entry to Parliament
Mr. Jack was elected for Fylde at the 1987 General Election. He fought Newcastle upon Tyne Central in February 1974, and during the 1979 General Election was personal assistant to Mr. James Prior (now Lord Prior). In 1983 he acted as PA to Sir Ian Percival. 

During his political career, he has held numerous posts in the Young Conservatives and in constituency associations. He was National Chairman of the Young Conservatives in 1976, and Vice Chairman North West CPC prior to entering Parliament. 

Appointments
He has been the Secretary of the Conservative Back Bench Transport Committee, Chairman of its Back Bench Horticulture Committee and was Secretary of the Conservative North West Members Group. He was also Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Hon John Gummer MP, first as Local Government Minister, and subsequently as Minister for Agriculture Fisheries and Food. 

From November 1990 until April 1992 Mr. Jack was parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Social Security, and from April 1992 until May 1993 he was Minister of State at the Home Office. Mr. Jack was Minister of State at the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food from May 1993 until July 1995. From July 1995 to April 1997 Mr. Jack was Financial Secretary to HM Treasury with special responsibility for UK tax policy. In the 1996 Christmas honours he was appointed to the Privy Council From May 1997 until November 1997, Mr. Jack was Shadow Health Minister, after which he became Shadow Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, a position he held until August 1998. In July 1999 he was appointed to the Agriculture Select Committee. This role was continued in the current Parliament when he was appointed to the new Environment, Food and Rural affairs Select Committee. He has also chaired specialist sub committee investigations into the disposal of " domestic fridges" and Hazardous Waste. He also currently chairs sub-committee enquiries into vets and veterinary services, and the future of London's wholesale markets.
In December 2003 Mr Jack was appointed Chairman of the Environment and Rural Affairs Select Committee, chairing the enquiries into 'Ghost Ships' and the Marine Environment. He is a member of the 1922 Executive Committee and Secretary to the North West Members Group of Conservative MPs. 

Personal Interests
His personal interests include dinghy sailing, motor sport, growing vegetables, travel and Boules. Among the countries Mr. Jack has visited are China, South Africa, Canada, the United States, India, New Zealand and most of Europe. 

Outside Parliament he has been closely involved in producing a Code of Practice to regulate the sale and management of private sheltered accommodation. 

Locally, Michael Jack is President of Clifton Hospital League of Friends, Lytham St Anne's Friends of Trinity Hospice and Lytham Road Runners, Nogal Players, and the Lytham Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club. He is a member of the Ribble Cruising Club as well as a Trustee of Med Alert and the Lytham Community Association.
